We are pleased to announce that Sarah Taylor, MuchMusic VJ, and Johnny Hockin, MTV News Reporter, will be co-hosting the TEDxToronto event on September 30th, 2010.
Sarah Taylor, MuchMusic VJ
The most challenging part of Sarah’s gig is learning the importance of communication refinement. Citing one example in particular, her humour has been known to get her into trouble, like the time she called one famous interviewee “monkey boy.” Oops. “It was a term of endearment taken incorrectly, but you live and learn.” According to Sarah, the best part of being a VJ is “travelling, meeting amazing people, and free concert tickets!” If Sarah wasn’t a VJ, she would most likely be an out of work nightclub singer with a weakness for world cinema, cereal and romance, or Alex Owen (Jennifer Beals) from Flashdance.
On communication Sarah says "…the idea that I can be a bridge between die-hard music fans and their favourite artists, while having front row, all-access passes to some of the most mind blowing live performances is nothing less than incredible. While I’ve been fortunate to travel and have many life changing experiences on the job, the interview process has always been the most treasured, irreplaceable aspect of that.”
From Video Extra To Video Vixen
Sarah’s first gig in front of the camera had her working as a video extra. Unfortunately, it was not completely an enjoyable experience, “…there were a lot of close ups of my stomach…it was kind of awkward.” She prefers her on air job now, being able to intro new artists to a music-hungry public.

Johnny Hockin, MTV News Reporter
Johnny Hockin is a reporter and segment producer for MTV NEWS. Also serving as the interactive coordinator for MTV LIVE, Johnny blogs about the latest and greatest in media today, specializing in digital gadgets, music, gaming and the online world.
In his years at MTV, Johnny has captivated audiences with the stories of the world's most influential artists and personalities, including interviews with Pharrell Williams, Q-Tip, LL Cool J, Usher, Lily Allen, Michael Cera and Lupe Fiasco.
Keeping a gauge on social issues that have an affect on youth culture, Johnny has travelled the world to bring his viewers insights into world events through the lens of MTV cameras. While in Beijing as a MTV correspondent for the 2008 Olympics, Johnny brought forward the discussion of green initiatives in light of environmental reform China had to undertake in preparation of the games. He has also covered star-studded events including THE JUNO AWARDS, MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS and Canada’s coveted Polaris Prize.
Did you know?
Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Johnny grew up listening to hip-hop classics, and admits his previous television experience is limited to "watching a lot of it.” The avid shoe collector considers himself fashion-conscious, but his style can be described as the frills without the fuss.
Prior to MTV, Johnny studied music (McGill University) and film (Ryerson University), which provided him with a solid foundation entering the MTV scene. He also scratched records as a DJ and started a small record label called More Proof which he still jams with to this very day. The label is host to numerous bands and has experienced a great deal of popularity in Toronto.
