TEDxToronto is proud to announce our official "artist-in-residence", Robert Bolton.
Robert Bolton is an award-winning poet and recording artist + one-half of the band, Times Neue Roman and a contributing member of the recording artist collective Broadway Sleep. He has performed his work across Canada, the US, Japan, and Cuba. Robert recently completed a Masters of Arts in the Humanities at the University of Chicago. He currently lives in Toronto where he works as a creative communications consultant.
Aside from the official lines, Robert is a brilliant guy who crafts interesting, insightful and timely pieces which he then couches in different forms of creative delivery. His medium is most often the spoken word but its his mercurial styles of delivery that makes him so engaging. Whether it is spoken-word poetry coupled with the incredible visuals of Eric "eepmon" Chan in his dystopian "Orpheus" project or tongue twisting/breath defying rap verses over synthy nintendo inspired beats with band "Times Neue Roman" or else the measured tones of an vulnerable but self-confident conspirator floating over the dreamy instrumentals of "Broadway sleep", Robert Bolton's brand of cultural critiques and live reporting from the frontlines of today's frenetic youth culture is something to be enjoyed, and taken heed.
Robert, along with his partners, confidants and group of scoundrels has been creating and tweaking pieces to speak to this year's theme, "A Call To Action".
We are extremely excited to welcome Robert Bolton to TEDxToronto.
Broad Way Sleep
As part of Robert Bolton's "artist-in-residency" at TEDxToronto we are delighted and excited to welcome creative collective "Broadway Sleep" to the Glenn Gould stage in the morning of TEDxToronto's program.
Led by songwriter and executive producer Ralph Joseph, Broad Way Sleep http://www.broadwaysleep.com/ is a sonic tour-de-force that has brought together some of the finest vocalists and songwriters emerging out of Toronto. Featuring Alexander Thehttp://www.alexanderthe.com/ (of Styrofoam Ones), Sarah Shafey and Robert Bolton aka Arowbe (of Times Neue Romanhttp://radio3.cbc.ca/#/bands/Times-Neue-Roman) Broad Way Sleep is a collaboration that looks to fuse elements of electronic rock, soul, jazz, rap, ska and theatre in a fresh approach to delivering fantastic new pop.
“It’s music for Mad Men’s Don Draper if he took Alice out for drinks in Wonderland” says Ralph Joseph, executive producer on the project. “As a group Broad Way Sleep doesn’t have one fixed genre, we looked to harness the talents of the individual artists participating in the project and all believe in sharing our work to create unique music together.
DJ MensaFrom the smallest of lounges to thousands in attendance, Mensa has brought parties to life across Canada, the US, and his native Philippines. Smooth mixing paired with a turntablist’s sensibility make his sound hard to duplicate, and has quickly made him one of Toronto’s favorite DJ’s.
Having already made guest appearances on MuchVibe, Rap City, MTV Select and CBC, the word has spread about DJ Mensa. His Coolout brand mixes have gained notoriety both locally and overseas, and a slew of side projects and shows will have him occupied indefinitely.
But what is most important to Mensa is keeping the vibe. From the warm-up to cooldown, and everything in between, Mensa is always fully in the know.

DJ AgileWhile his peers were stealing their brothers ID to get into parties, Agile was DJing at the best venues in the city with Canadian heavyweights Starting from Scratch, DJ X, and MasterMind. All this at a time when there was NO urban radio, NO BET, and only a small, budding hip-hop scene in Canada. To be a part of hip-hop at its earliest stages in this country, is a contributing factor in Agiles popularity today.
Many moons later, Agile has come into his own not only as a versatile and popular DJ but as a producer too! His unique sound (courtesy of an MPC 3000 & a Kurzweil K2000S) are in demand from the best artists to come from the US and Canada. Of course, his own cliques, BrassMunk and Big Black Lincoln get first grabs at the music but Agile has also produced for the likes of Nas, Kardinal Offishall, Dwele, Jully Black & Ivana Santilli.
As a founding member of BrassMunk, one of Canada’s premier rap groups, Agile has received 4 Juno nominations (Canada’s Grammy, 2000, 2003, 2004 & 2007), 5 MuchMusic Video Award Nominations (2000-2004), and in 2002 BrassMunk were the first hip-hop group to ever win the Rising Star Award from the NXNE (Canada’s most important showcase for indie artists).
Outside of dj’ing some of the best parties in the city, Agile is currently at work with a collective of established singers & rappers finishing up his anticipated debut solo album. His first single “Focused” featuring the incomparable Liya is out now with the latest House Music Remix dropping this month.
With a strong work ethic, a reputation and repertoire that speaks volumes, there is no slowing down this multi-tasking, multi-talented workaholic.
