Volunteering with TEDxToronto is an incredible experience.  You’ll meet a community of amazing people, be inspired by our mission of ‘ideas worth spreading’, and expose yourself to incredible opportunities for learning, growth and personal development.

We are an entirely volunteer-run non-profit, and each year, our mission to spread important ideas from Toronto the world is brought to life by a team of over 60 volunteers.

We are recruiting for positions on our core organizing team, including Marketing, PR, Creative, Fundraising, Project Management, Curation and Speaker Coaching.  We’re also recruiting for many of our organizing teams, detailed below:

Core team roles

Head of Marketing
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you passionate about the world of social media and how organizations connect with the people they serve?  Join our core team as the Head of Marketing, and you’ll be responsible for increasing awareness and engagement with TEDxToronto around the GTHA. The responsibilities of this role include:

  1. Grow our brand awareness and following on social media channels through marketing campaigns
  2. Create and execute content along with the Creative Director for all social, email and print marketing year round
  3. Manage website content and updates 
  4. Drive awareness and promote ticket sales before the conference 
  5. Work with Community Outreach to promote Adventures and other events leading up to, and after the conference 
  6. Manage digital projects with partners  

Head of PR
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you thrive on creating buzz and amplifying the narrative that will resonate with media about events, such as TEDxToronto? Join our core team as Head of PR and Media, and you’ll be responsible for promoting and connecting TEDxToronto with media and social game changers across the GTHA.  The responsibilities of this role include:

  1. Leading and managing a PR team (and/or outside media agency) 
  2. Overseeing press releases, media distribution and core messaging
  3. Securing media coverage and coordinating interviews with the core team, coaches and speakers 
  4. Working with marketing and community outreach to promote events leading up to, and after the conference 
  5. Creating PR work back schedules, media materials (including headshots + bios), and pitches 
  6. Establishing goals, objectives and KPIs in terms of the type of, and number of, media we garner for the year
  7. Solidifying new, in-kind, media partners that have beneficial relationships leading up to and during the conference 

Creative Director
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you dream of creating visual identities for organizations?  As Creative Director for TEDxToronto, you’ll be in charge of building the visual identity that we show the world.  From theme branding to year round graphic designs for social media, to venue decor, volunteer t-shirts and our program book – the world is your oyster. We’re looking for a CD with significant experience in graphic design. You’ll be recruiting a team of skilled designers, and together, here’s what you’ll be building:

  1. Conference & Theme Branding
  2. Social Media Graphics and advertising 
  3. Venue designs, including signage and stage design
  4. Program designs, including badges, our program book and volunteer T-shirts
  5. Speaker Portrait Photography and Year Round Photography

Head of Digital Ticketing
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you fascinated by the process of promoting events? Do you have a wealth of digital and SEO knowledge to help drive awareness and ticket sales of TEDxToronto’s main event?
The responsibilities of this role will include:

  1. Strategy for releasing ticket sales for the event, and the promotion ticket sales leading up to the event 
  2. Strategy and implementation of Paid Social Campaigns to drive ticket sales 
  3. SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  4. Identifying ticketing and registration partners to improve our current process 
  5. Identifying and overseeing Corporate Ticket Packages strategy 

Head of Fund Development
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you excited by the opportunity to build TEDxToronto’s first ever charitable foundation, in service to our mission to spread ideas from the Greater Toronto Region to the world?  The responsibilities of this role will include:

  1. Developing the strategy of our first ever charitable foundation
  2. Developing and executing an annual fundraising program
  3. Researching, cultivating, and soliciting new donors, both individual and corporate
  4. Providing donors with an exceptional giving experience
  5. Recruiting and overseeing volunteer team members as needed to build out a Foundation team
  6. Overseeing grant applications 

Head of Talent
Core Team Position, 10-15 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you love building teams, and helping people learn and grow?  Are you excited at the idea of building a team of 60+ volunteers, across dozens of disciplines, and helping create an unparalleled volunteer experience, full of fun, mission, learning and growth?  Join our team as our first ever Head of Talent, and you’ll be doing just that:

  1. Working with the dozen members of our core planning team to help them find incredible, talented and passionate volunteers in fields from creative design, to event production, and community outreach to finance operations
  2. Recruiting a volunteer manager and overseeing the recruitment of 80+ event-day volunteers for our tentpole event in October, as well as our year round TEDxToronto Adventures
  3. Working with our team leaders to build an exceptional volunteer experience, and one that is full of learning and growth.
  4. Organizing retreats and special events for volunteer celebration and learning
  5. Helping connect volunteers across teams for mentoring opportunities

Chief of Staff
Core Team Position, 10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you a quick learner who wants to have impact across the breadth of our organization?  Someone who balances a strategic focus with operational drive to ensure teams meet critical deadlines and key risks are managed? Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Working directly with the co-chairs and team leads in order to ensure progress on all key deliverables
  2. Maintaining a bird’s eye view across teams, connecting the dots to manage risk and timelines
  3. Ensuring rigorous project management across the organization, creating new systems and processes to streamline our operations
  4. Setting agendas and deliverables for core team meetings
  5. Taking on strategic projects as needed

 

Partnerships Team

Our partners play a critical role in financially supporting our organization, sharing compelling content, and bringing to life immersive experiences.  We meet partners at the intersection of inspirational ideas, and applied action. In 2019, we partnered with nearly 50 organizations across industries and sectors, from local community-based organizations, to global brands.

Strategic Partnerships Lead
Partnerships Team Position, 10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you keen to use your strategic prowess and creative vision to secure best-in-class partnerships and enhance brand awareness in our community?  We’re looking for passionate, savvy, creative and independent leaders. You’ll have a strong business background and entrepreneurial spirit, which you’ll use to develop, secure and manage partners across some of the most exciting, innovative and impactful organizations in the GTHA.  Responsibilities include:

  1. Driving lead generation and managing client relationships
  2. Owning your partnership business: prospecting, negotiating, and closing brand level sponsorships
  3. Working creatively with partners to create opportunities to showcase their brand and thought leadership through immersive and unique experiences
  4. Owning the client relationship and acting as the primary point of contact throughout the cycle, including on-site at our flagship event, and post-event for recap

PR & Media Partnerships Lead
Partnerships Team Position, 10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you keen to build partnerships across marketing, social media, PR and influencers?  Responsibilities include:

  1. Working across key brands, publications, media outlets and influencers in the GTHA to build a pipeline and strategy for creative partnerships
  2. Collaborating with our PR and Marketing teams to bring partnerships to life through integrated marketing, social media, and PR, in order to build awareness and loyalty
  3. Collaborating with our PR and Marketing teams to develop an influencer strategy

Community Partnerships Lead
Partnerships Team Position, 10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you dream about building partnerships with boutiques, artisans and small businesses, to showcase the incredible creative talent in Toronto’s business community, and create incredible experiences for our delegates?  Responsibilities include:

  1. Brainstorming and conceptualizing new and exciting experiences to bring to life at our flagship conference
  2. Sourcing, negotiating and securing creative partnerships with smaller businesses that showcase innovation, build custom products and create an exceptional delegate experience
  3. Further develop and expand the TEDxToronto Adventures brand, collaborating with organizations and brands to create exciting and engaging experience in the community
  4. Identify and source partners for Speaker Gifts and Delegate Gift Bag opportunities

Food & Beverage Partnerships Lead
Partnerships Team Position, 10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you excited by the idea of building partnerships with Toronto’s top food and beverage brands?  Responsibilities include:

  1. Brainstorming, conceptualizing and executing the food and beverage experience for TEDxToronto 2020
  2. Working across food vendors, brands, restaurants and other local businesses to establish hospitality partnerships
  3. Collaborating closely with the Logistics team on managing and executing partnerships

 

Curation and Coaching Team

 

Curator and Speaker Coach
Coaching & Curation Team Position, 4 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you excited by the idea of finding people with incredible “ideas worth spreading” from across the GTA, and working closely with them to develop their talks? We’re looking for empathetic, curious minds to join our curation and coaching team. You’ll be responsible for contributing to curating a diverse group of speakers, and coaching 1-2 of them, developing their talk from idea, to outline, to on-stage performance!  Note – you don’t need to have experience coaching speakers – just a warm, caring and curious approach to the world! Responsibilities include:

  1. Curation: review community nominations and help curate speakers from the GTHA community over March-June
  2. Coaching: coach 1-2 speakers over July-October
  3. Attend team meetings (bi-weekly) during curation and coaching
  4. Pair up with other team members as necessary in Sept/Oct to help speakers finalize their talks

Science Specialist Curator and Speaker Coach

Coaching & Curation Team Position, 4 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you excited by connecting to the scientific communities across the GTA to find incredible ‘ideas worth spreading’ to our stage?  We’re looking for a science curator who brings extensive experience across academic and scientific research communities and who’s eager to expand their network by connecting with leaders across our region.

Technology Specialist Curator and Speaker Coach
Coaching & Curation Team Position, 4 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you fascinated by the GTA’s technology ecosystem, and eager to help bring incredible technology-based ‘ideas worth spreading’ to our stage?  We’re looking for a technology curator to scour the GTA for incredible technological innovation, from startups to academic institutions.

Performances Curator
Coaching & Curation Team Position, 4 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you dream about discovering emerging artists and bringing them to the TEDxToronto stage?  Each year, we feature performers from a range of disciplines: from music to comedy, to dance and beyond.  Our Performances curator is responsible for finding incredible “performances worth spreading”, by uncovering under-represented or emerging talent from across the region, to build an exceptional audience experience.  Responsibilities include:

  1. Curating up to four performances, across a range of disciplines
  2. Working across our Creative and Speaker Curation teams to create a vision for how performances will contribute to the audience experience
  3. Working with performers and our Logistics team to bring the performances to life

 

Foundation team

 

Grants officer
Foundation Team Position, 4 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you excited by the idea of navigating municipal, provincial, federal and other funding programs for events and cultural institutions to identify opportunities for TEDxToronto?  We’re looking for a government grants officer to help identify sources of government funding for our 365-day community. You’ll be responsible for:

  1. Working across municipal, provincial and federal government, as well as other arms-length organizations to identify funding programs aligned with TEDxToronto’s mission
  2. Working across the TEDxToronto core team to collect information and write grant applications
  3. Managing relationships with various granting agencies 

 

Creative Team

 

Art Director
Creative Team, 5-10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference).

Are you design savvy, with a keen eye for detail, and love the challenge of creating what visually resonates with people? Responsibilities include: 

  1. Assist in managing/guiding a team of talented graphic designers 
  2. Develop graphic approaches, styles, layouts and techniques for the team to implement 
  3. Establish standards for production and quality. Ensure team adheres to current design guidelines and proposing and creating processes and tools to support design operations 
  4. Assist in creating visuals for print, digital, social and experiential content using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (Premiere and/or After Effects a plus) 
  5. Designing visuals under tight deadlines

Graphic Designer

Creative Team, 5-10 hours/week (may increase closer to conference).
Do you set out to inspire others with your creative graphics? TEDxToronto is looking for experienced Graphic Designers with a clean, crisp design aesthetic, a positive attitude and a strong work ethic. Reporting to the Creative Director, the responsibilities of this role include: 

  1. Creating visuals for print, digital, social, and experiential content using Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign—(Premiere and/or After Effects a plus)
  2. Managing production design and final print set-up for pre-press
  3. Collaborating with the Creative Team through effective communication
  4. Designing visuals under tight deadlines

Marketing Team

 

Copywriter
Marketing Team Position, 5-8 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you a creative and imaginative thinker that’s naturally curious, with excellent writing skills? Are you excited by the challenge to write copy that can inspire thought, debate and action,  sometimes in 20 words or less? The copywriter will get to be the voice of TEDxToronto, taking readers on a journey – informing them of the our mission, while also inspiring them, and creating memorable content.  Responsibilities include: 

  1. Write and edit copy for a variety of projects including: social media, email, web and print 
  2. Work closely with the marketing lead to brainstorm ideas, create concepts and develop messaging 
  3. Follow brand guidelines to ensure a consistent tone of voice 

Social Media Manager
Marketing Team Position, 5-8 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Do you spend your day surfing through Instagram, and enjoy posting and interacting with people on social media? Are you excited by the opportunity to connect with the TEDxToronto audience in an engaging and authentic way? Responsibilities include: 

  1. Build a social media strategy to dramatically increase the size of the TEDxToronto online community
  2. Curate, manage and publish all social media content (across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn) and promote content through social advertising (experience implementing paid social campaigns preferred)
  3. Implement a content editorial calendar to manage content and plan specific, timely marketing campaigns 
  4. Monitor, listen and respond to follower requests, questions and comments 
  5. Analyze key metrics and tweak strategy as needed

Email Marketing Specialist
Marketing Team Position, 5 hours/week (may increase closer to conference)

Are you an avid email reader and writer, often pondering what subject lines are most effective to get people to open up and read more? This role is designed to help us connect with the GTHA to help share ‘ideas worth spreading’ in longer form email communications. Responsibilities include:  

  1. Write content, format and implement direct email marketing campaigns using MailChimp (experience using the software considered a plus)
  2. A/B testing on various email campaigns to establish the most effective approaches 
  3. Ensuring design and layouts of emails are optimized, user and mobile-friendly
  4. Tracking and analyzing and reporting on email campaign results 
  5. Organizing and segmenting email lists 

Web Developer
Marketing Team Position

Do you dream about building websites that showcase brands and their missions?  We’re looking for a talented web developer to lead the re-design of our TEDxToronto website, giving it a needed makeover, and improving navigation.  This could be an incredibly fun and impactful project for a freelance developer that would like to build a ‘calling card’ to show what they can do. You’d be responsible for:

  1. Working across all team leaders to understand their needs, and re-develop the content and format of our websites
  2. Building the site yourself using a WordPress template or custom coding, and/or sourcing and working with a development agency that’s interested in partnering with TEDxToronto
