Ran Goel is a former Wall Street investment lawyer on a mission to build a better world through food, Ran Goel founded Fresh City Farms in 2011. From an urban farm to a widespread delivery business and eight organic grocery stores, Ran is passionate about connecting people directly to the source of their food, and is a driving force for using better food practices to create stronger communities and healthier environments.
Despite inflation, food today is historically cheap. Our grandparents spent 25% of their income on food, but nowadays, we only spend 8%. Over the years, innovation helped bring costs down. But these prices are really only possible because of harsh conditions along the supply chain. To keep food cheap, farm workers, animals, and the environment are paying the price.
When we understand where our food comes from, we can protect the nature and labour that keep us fed and happy. With an urban farm and eight organic grocery stores in downtown Toronto, Fresh City Farms is on a mission to turn consumers into active citizens to create stronger communities, healthier environments, and a more just food system.
On June 23, 2022, our TEDxToronto community got an in-person, guided tour of Fresh City Farms’ new 11-acre urban farm from Ran Goel, TEDxToronto alumni speaker and Founder of Fresh City Farms, and Jeffrey Stojen, Farm Manager at Fresh City Farms. They got to try their hand at farm work and learned how Fresh City engages the community to create a more just food system for all.
